How to Make a Transparent PNG
A transparent PNG is an image file that can contain invisible pixels around a visible subject. Unlike a white JPG, it does not force a rectangle behind the subject. That makes it useful for logos, product cutouts, profile graphics, stickers, and layered designs.
The quick version
- Upload the source image to the CutoutCat background remover.
- Review the checkerboard preview to confirm the unwanted area is transparent.
- Select Transparent and download the PNG.
- Place the PNG over a new background and inspect the edges at its final display size.
What makes a PNG transparent?
PNG files can store an alpha channel alongside red, green, and blue color information. Each pixel can therefore be fully visible, partly visible, or invisible. The checkerboard pattern you see in an editor is not part of the saved image; it is a visual cue that represents transparent areas.
JPG does not store this same kind of transparency. If you save a cutout as JPG, the transparent area must be filled with a color, usually white. PNG is the safer choice whenever an image will be layered over a background later.
Create a transparent PNG with CutoutCat
Start with an image that has a distinct foreground. Upload it to CutoutCat, let the browser finish processing, and confirm that the preview shows a checkerboard around the subject. The tool creates the cutout locally and keeps your original image available only in your browser session.
Choose the Transparent background option before downloading. White, black, and custom colors are available as visual and export alternatives when you need a finished image with a solid background, but each of those exports is still saved as a PNG.
Use the file in another design
After downloading, import the PNG into the app where you plan to use it. In a design tool, place it above a color or photo layer. In a website, it can sit over a CSS background. In a store listing, check the marketplace rules because some services require a white background even if your working file is transparent.
Do not judge the file only against the checkerboard. Test it against both a light and dark background. Small remnants of the old scene are easier to spot when the contrast changes, and hair or soft edges may need a final touch-up.
Preserve useful quality
Avoid repeatedly opening and resaving a PNG through a workflow that converts it to JPG. PNG is lossless for the color information it stores, so it is a good intermediate and final format for sharp edges, text, and logos. If the file is very large, resize a copy for the exact placement instead of shrinking it through multiple exports.
Name the downloaded file clearly and keep the original beside it. A naming pattern such as product-front.png and product-front-no-bg.png makes it easier to update a listing later.
Frequently asked questions
Is the checkerboard saved into my PNG?
No. It is only the preview pattern used to show transparency. The downloaded PNG contains transparent pixels in those areas.
Can a transparent PNG have a colored background later?
Yes. Add a color layer behind it in your design tool, or choose a solid color in CutoutCat when you want that color baked into the download.
Why does my PNG look white in one app?
Some viewers display transparent pixels against white by default. Open the file over a contrasting layer to confirm that the alpha channel is present.
