How to Remove a Background From an Image

Removing a background means separating the main subject from the surrounding scene. That subject might be a product, a person, a pet, or a simple object. CutoutCat makes the first pass in your browser, so you can start with a familiar image file and finish with a PNG that has transparent pixels around the subject.

The quick version

  1. Select a JPG, PNG, or WebP image under 15MB.
  2. Wait while CutoutCat identifies the foreground in your browser.
  3. Inspect the transparent preview and choose a background color if you want to test contrast.
  4. Download the result as a PNG and place it in your design or store listing.

Choose an image that gives the subject room

The best source image has a clear subject and enough contrast between the subject and its surroundings. A well-lit product on a table, a portrait against a wall, or a pet sitting on a floor are all good starting points. Images with motion blur, extreme shadows, or a subject that blends into the background may need a little manual cleanup in a separate editor after the automatic pass.

Before you begin, check the file type and size. CutoutCat accepts JPG, PNG, and WebP files up to 15MB. Keeping the original file is useful because you can always try another crop or a brighter version if the first result is not as clean as you want.

Remove the background in your browser

Open the CutoutCat tool and select your image or drag it into the upload area. The removal model loads in the browser and identifies the foreground subject. The image is processed on your device rather than sent to a CutoutCat upload server, which is helpful when the image is private or still being prepared for publication.

Processing time depends on your device, the image dimensions, and whether the model needs to download its resources the first time. Keep the tab open while the progress indicator runs. You do not need an account or a separate desktop application.

Check the edges before downloading

Use the checkerboard preview to inspect the outline. Look at thin straps, fingers, whiskers, hair, and the space between objects. A busy edge can sometimes include a small amount of the original background or trim away part of the subject. If the result needs more control, make a cleaner source image or use an image editor for a final mask adjustment.

The preview also lets you test white, black, or a custom background color. These options are useful for checking contrast, but the transparent option is the one to choose when you want the subject to sit on a new page, product card, presentation, or social graphic.

Download a transparent PNG

Select Transparent and choose Download PNG. PNG is important because it can preserve an alpha channel: the information that tells other software which pixels should be invisible. The downloaded filename ends in -no-bg.png so it is easy to distinguish from your original file.

Keep the original and the cutout together until you have checked the final placement in its destination. A transparent file can look different against a dark website, a white marketplace page, or a colorful social template. That quick check catches halos and low-contrast edges before publication.

Frequently asked questions

Can I remove a background without an account?

Yes. CutoutCat is designed for no-login use. Choose an image, wait for local processing, and download the result.

Why does the result have a faint halo?

Halos usually come from similar colors, soft shadows, or compression around the original edge. Try a sharper, better-lit source image and inspect the edge at a larger size.

Does removing a background change my original?

No. The original File object is read in the browser and the download is created as a separate PNG. Your source file remains unchanged on your device.
